Originally, the Glock 18 was introduced as a 9mm select-fire for military and police use in 1986, and was originally designed at the request of an Australian counter-terrorism unit. The main thing that visually separates the Glock 18 from its predecessor is the rotary switch lever-type fire control placed on the left side of the slide at the rear. The indented dots indicate the firing mode selected when the switch is in different positions. This locking mechanism has an unlinked, vertically inclined barrel with a rectangular boot that locks tightly into the slide. While the chamber pressure is high and dangerous, the barrel moves backwards in the recoil stroke, close tightly with the slide.
When the barrel pressure drops to a safer level and the bullet leaves the barrel, the barrel and slide unlock as a ramped lug extension at the base of the barrel and a conical locking block integral to the frame act together, pushing the barrel down. Called as camming action, this stops the movement of the barrel while the slide continues to move backwards from the recoil force, releases and finally ejects the used cartridge.
The shooting mechanism is also incredibly complicated and unique. Instead of using a conventional hammer, the Glock was designed to use a striker. The firing mechanism of this striker involves the use of a spring-loaded firing pin and a two-stage cocking system. The first position, half cock, is put into place when the pistol is loaded. Pull the trigger and then fully cock the striker as the round prepares to fire.
An integral connector tilts the trigger bar down when the pin reaches the end of its travel, which in turn releases the striker and fires the cartridge. Finally, it is restored to the half-cock position at the conclusion of the firing circuit as the disconnection restores the trigger bar.

The Glock 18 was tested and SAR evaluated, where hundreds and hundreds of 9mm bushy round and full metal jacket cartridges from a variety of different manufacturers were fired and examined. Even replacing the original spring and introducing a spring 15lbs lighter did not solve the problem. Eventually, this problem was solved by using a Wolff spring weighing 22lbs. After that, the test pistol worked perfectly and quietly in full automatic mode.
